Cold sores, painful blisters around the mouth or lips, are primarily caused by HSV-1, though HSV-2 can also be a culprit. Sometimes called “fever blisters” or “lip ulcers,” cold sores are a result of HSV exposure. A single cold sore is considered an outbreak, but multiple sores can appear, especially during the first episode. The first outbreak is often the worst, but symptoms tend to become milder over time as your body builds resistance. Antiviral medications can help prevent future outbreaks and speed up recovery.
